Victorian Basement Re-Do

Reclaimed barn board flanked by lavender walls creates a fun cozy rainy day spot.

Still a work in progress awaiting the family's creative wish-list.

A colorful, functional place for snack prep and entertaining.

A new utility room and wine room were carved out of a former dark and unused hallway.

Only 42 square feet - fabulous materials make it a tiny gem of a bath

Icy blue glass wall tile in the tiny walk-in shower

A formerly dark and inefficient storage room gets light, space, and a new fire escape window.

The Challenge: Turn a long-neglected - and slightly hazardous - basement of this Historic Register Victorian into a fun and safe and family entertainment space.
Solution: Rework the floorplan to use the approximately 1300 square feet more efficiently. Move or soffit much of the exposed ductwork, plumbing and electrical in the ceiling to make the space feel more open and safe. Repair and/or frame weathered foundation walls to make them ready for kid-approved paint colors. Move the bathroom to a better location and add a shower. Add a fire escape window for parents' peace of mind. Create a colorful kid-friendly kitchenette for entertaining and just hanging out.
Mom and four genuinely creative kids drove the aesthetic from colors to lighting and furnishings. The result is a cheerful, eclectic space that functions safely for kids, parents, and the family's pet menagerie.

Broken-up layout creates inefficient and hard-to-use space.

Foundation walls in need of extensive repair and a temporary plywood wall cuts the space in two.

A dark crawl space window and 80s cabinets and track lighting loom large.

A lot of exposed infrastructure taking up visual space.

The small outdated and barely functional partial bath needs more room to grow.

An unused dead-end hall is wasted space.

A lot of old shelving and dark spaces provide inefficient and insufficient storage.
